Thank you for sharing! I’m wondering what your TSH and free T4 levels were prior to starting l-thyroxine? Were they normal? If so, what led you to try levothyroxine?

      Hi Ann!

Unfortunately, we didn’t do baseline TSH and T4 levels. However, I wasn’t experiencing other related symptoms (besides psych). What led me to try levothyroxine? I have schizophrenia and bipolar 2 disorder (rapid-cycling). In addition to some residual symptoms of schizophrenia, I was experiencing some severe mood swings. Hypomanic 3-4 days out of the week; suicidally depressed the other 3-4 days.

I was ready to call life quits; however, I chose to research “alternative therapies for bipolar disorder” and “alternative therapies for schizophrenia.” I found several studies that suggested supraphysiologic dosages of levothyroxine might help. So, I printed out those studies and took them to my psychiatrist. He agreed to give levothyroxine a try, since I had tried everything else without relief. Thankfully, my response has been excellent, even life-changing.

In case you are interested, here is a link to those studies:

Thank you for your comment. I hope this information helps you or your loved one.
